Pia mater craniana

In general, este unistratificata, prezenta sub forma unei membrane epiteloide, care urmareste intim conturul creierului, mentinand un contact neintrerupt cu suprafata creierului, spre deosebire de arahnoida sau dura mater. Pia mater este vasculara si datorita faptului ca este subtire, vasele de sange sunt inconjurate fie de trabeculele arahnoidei, fie de celulele proprii ale acesteia. Profund de membrana epiteloida se gasesc fibre de colagen si elastice, ce organizeaza o matrice extracelulara subpiala, sustinuta de procesele astrocitelor (celule gliale) de la acest nivel, care constituie stratul protector subiacent. Interpusa intre spatiul subarahnoidian si creier, pia mater are rol in degradarea neurotransmitatorilor si in prevenirea deplasarii unor particule dintr-un compartiment in celalalt, dupa cum reiese din imposibilitatea eritrocitelor sa treaca prin pia mater, in cazul unei hemoragii subarahnoidiene.
